Colour is our response to certain wavelengths of electromagnetic energy that make up the visible spectrum of light. Its all around us, part of our everyday life it highlights beauty and shows our flaws.
Is it important to a designer? Of course, its one of our tools to assist consumers to make a decision on a product. Colour has a tremendous effect on our behaviour. Colour is not an artistic, subjective or intuitive medium but one that must be controlled intellectually. Whether it be laundry products, clothing, food or books, colour is the basis of our decision making and a great designer will utilitse this power to the best of their ability.
Mastering the use of colour theory is not a walk in the park however it is well worth the time in studying this complex subject. It is amazing that you can have the same picture and just by changing the colours you can portray different emotions. It is in your best interest as a designer to know how to use colour.
